Is It Better To Start Your Own Restaurant, Or Go With A Franchise?
Nowadays people all over the world love to eat out and America is no exception. With so many varieties of restaurants in horizon, our society is a food lover’s paradise. Stay in a major city and you can enjoy foods from different parts of the world all year round. So, it is no surprise that a new entrepreneur will love to start a restaurant. Even in this business, you have the option of starting your own restaurant or joining a franchising chain. In this regard, it must be said that franchised units are better than stand-alone restaurants and here’s why:
• The first area where franchises win over stand-alones is the support the franchisee gets while starting an establishment. From site-selection to employee hiring – most franchisors help the new players in every way possible. They set a working model in front of them and all the franchisee has to do is to follow it properly. But in stand-alone restaurant business, the owner has to do everything from the scratch. He has to run from pillar to post to get all the required licenses. Then there is the daily running process of the joint, which they have to oversee – from setting up the menu to getting vendors for raw material.
• You do not have to generate a name to attract customers in a franchised unit; the parent company has already done that. Most of the time it is seen that when you are a franchisee of a popular food chain, people are waiting outside the door of your restaurant to get in. But in case of a stand-alone restaurant, you will need at least one year before you get a full-house.
• Being a part of the chain, you will get substantial rebates from the vendors that a stand-alone restaurant can’t get. In addition, you get to learn form the combined experience of the parent company as well as other existing franchisees while a stand-alone restaurant has to learn form its own mistakes.
Hence, you see it is always better following a successful format than failing while trying to create one. But, in defense of stand-alone restaurants, it can be said that they offer more freedom than a franchised unit. It can choose its own menu and operate in its own way whereas a franchise has to follow the rules and regulations of the franchisor. So, if you are in the food business due to your passion for food, then it is better that you go for stand-alone restaurant than a franchised one.
